What is a Colonic?

by Kelly McCoy

A Colonic is a colon cleanse that removes old encrusted fecal matter, gas and poisons that have accumulated along the walls of the colon over time. It differs from an enema in that there is no internal pressure and the entire length of the colon is cleansed. Only a few ounces of water enter the colon at one time and then it is released along with waste that is ready to evacuate. Gentle massage is used on the abdomen to stimulate peristalsis which is the wave like action that moves waste out of the body. The combination of the water movement and massage also help to tone and reshape the colon.

Reasons for a Colonic

AUTOINTOXICATION

One of the main reasons for a Colonic is the condition of autointoxication. The colon is responsible for eliminating waste and keeping the internal environment in balance. The body reabsorbs colon content for water and any remaining nutrients, and if it’s impacted with putrified matter, that is what recirculates through the body. Side effects from this condition can include; fatigue, gas, headaches, skin problems and depression.

CONSTIPATION

The definition of constipation is “to press or crowd together, to pack, to cram.” When this condition occurs it makes the process of evacuation more difficult and diminishes the strength of the colon musculature. A normal healthy bowel movement should be 8-10 inches in length (this varies with food portions), 2 inches in diameter, and we should have a movement 20 minutes after each meal. If you have one bowel movement a day and you are eating three meals a day, your body is holding waste.

CAUSES OF CONSTIPATION

The source of constipation varies from person to person but there are basic factors that contribute to the condition. Processed, refined and chemically treated foods cause the body to react with alarm to the foreign matter causing irritation. The body signals the release of mucous and protects the walls from the unnatural elements passing through the digestive tract. Over time, the accumulation of mucous produces mucoid placque which diminishes complete elimination causing back up of waste.
